Where were you born? Where do you live now?
Blackburn (grew up Accrington), now in Todmorden
What is your favourite musical memory?
Walking in to Brandenburg 4 on my wedding day.
Why did you decide on your instrument?
I started on the violin but at sixteen my teacher suggested that the viola might be more appropriate because of my ever-lengthening arms.
What is the most memorable performance you’ve given and why/highlight of your career?
Playing the Mendelssohn Octet with the Chilingirian Quartet whilst I was at the Royal College of Music. My teacher was the viola player and they had a great influence on my playing.
In your opinion, which piece of music is a must-have for the CD collection, classical or otherwise?
The Goldberg Variations by Bach
Which musician(s) have you most enjoyed playing with?
The violinist Gordan Nikolitch for his incredibly wide view of the world and music.
In your opinion, which piece of music most embodies the spirit of Lancashire?
Probably ‘The Lark Ascending’ by Vaughan Williams because of the tranquillity of the Lancashire countryside.
