1ODYSSEY – A MUSICAL EPIC!
During the 10th Anniversary Season, The Lancashire Sinfonietta embarked upon its most ambitious Education Programme yet: “10dyssey”, based on Homer’s epic tale. Homer, the blind minstrel, sings of his hero’s extraordinary 10-year journey after the fall of the city of Troy to the Greeks. The story tells of magical creatures, – the deadly Cyclops, towering giants, singing sirens – and how our hero outwits them; of great battles and bejeweled palaces; of the interfering Gods and the many ways they try to hinder or help brave Odysseus as he tries to make his long journey back to his homeland. The Odyssey has a huge amount of inspirational material to utilise, and the tale was used as a starting point for the projects.
The project won funding support from the Arts Council England, and 10 projects were delivered across the County during the 2005/06 Season. The professional musicians of the Sinfonietta held workshops and performance sessions with expert storytellers and animateurs, headed by experienced education practitioner, Naomi Atherton. Performances took place in a wide variety of locations and our pre-concert events were also centred on this unique and exciting project.
The success of “10dyssey” means that we are able to continue to offer these projects to schools. Workshops and projects are available for pre-school, Key Stage 1 & 2 and GCSE classes.
