Lancashire County Council Live At LICA
Lancashire Sinfonietta Banner

This Season 2011-12

This season we are touring our very best music to each corner of the County - in fact we're coming up close and personal!

The Sinfonietta is 16 years old - and how time flies when you're having fun. Our artists include the finest professional musicians, soloists and directors, all committed to giving you an unforgettable musical experience in local venues.

This season we have a varied programme to delight audiences of every age. Our season opens with a concert for children at the Preston Arts Festival. Dinosaur Roar! is part of our Sound Playground music programme for children under 5 years, and this jurassic romp is a must for all children looking for their first live musical experience. There will be many more performances too, so sign up to our newsletters if you're interested in attending.

We have a one-night-only-do-not-miss performance of Bizet's fiery Carmen at Accrington Town Hall. Flirty, dramatic and spine-tingling music come together in this collaboration with the amazing Heritage Opera. Get your tickets as soon as you can as this will be very special indeed.

At Christmas we bring back the fabulous violinist Andrew Watkinson who is without a doubt one of our most highly regarded directors. He has crafted a programme for the Chrismassy combination of flute, harp and strings and will lead these atmospheric concertos by candlelight. These are the perfect way to celebrate the run up to Christmas with friends or family.

Andrew returns in March with international guitar heroine, Xuefei Yang. This virtuoso musician has to be seen to be believed and is arguably the finest guitarist in the world right now. We were thrilled when she asked to perform her new Bach transcription and the wonderful Rodrigo Concerto d'Aranjuez with us at the International Concert Series at Live at LICA (Lancaster University).

We will also premiere a new work by Tom Coult written specially for the orchestra as part of the Christopher Brooks Memorial Prize.

We are also delighted to announce that the Lancashire Sinfonietta is taking up the prestigious position of "Orchestra in Residence" at Lancaster University. Lancaster is one the top ten universities in the UK and hosts both the Live at LICA series and the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts.

The residency will give a much needed home to the orchestra, provide our box office, host our young composer's residency and provide many exciting opportunities for new cross arts collaborations with both academic departments and visiting artists.

March also sees a double requiem performance with the Lancaster Singers (Mozart & Michael Haydn) and in April we commemorate the sinking of the Titanic with a special charity event in Padiham, Burnley. We are running a project with Lancashire Primary schools on the Titanic - "And the Band Played On" - contact me for details if your school would like to be involved.

In June, our dear friend from Northern Sinfonia, Bradley Creswick comes back to direct one of our most uplifting programmes - Mendlessohn Octet + Mozart Sinfonia Concertante + Beethoven's 2nd Symphony - guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

As always, there will be many more events popping up in between, so please keep in touch with us so you don't miss out.

We're nothing without our wonderful audience - thank you for continuing to support our work and this precious cultural resource for Lancashire.

I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon,
