For twelve seasons the Lancashire Sinfonietta has steadily built up a fantastic reputation among concert goers. Our popularity grows as shown by attendances at local concerts and from the feedback on our varied and original community and educational projects.
We continue to attract top artists and guest directors to perform with us and we have produced three well received cds.
However as Lancashire's only professional orchestra we feel we can still do more to ensure that our unique status as a top performing ensemble is understood by the wider public both within the County and regionally and nationally.
We know our profile could be much higher. We need more classical music goers to be aware of what we offer. In 2008 we are embarking on a range of media strategies to achieve this.
However, anecdotal and professional evidence suggests that one step we may have to take is to change our name.
A number of audience members, non-concert goers and players have suggested that audience numbers could be increased if there was less confusion over the orchestra's name.
'Sinfonietta' means a scaled down version of a symphony orchestra or a 'chamber' orchestra which, like the Lancashire Sinfonietta, typically has about 30 - 40 players.
Although regular concert goers may not have a problem with the use of the term it appears others in the wider public do. For some people even the pronunciation of 'Sinfonietta' appers to provide a problem!
